Tata Motors is strategically diversifying its portfolio by introducing a wide array of powertrain options, ranging from petrol, diesel, and CNG to the mass-market EVs. In recent times, the Indian carmaker has emphasised a lot on CNG models. Tata’s iCNG lineup not only boasts an array of features, their standout feature remains the uncompromised boot space achieved through the twin-cylinder technology.
Recently, Tata has also extended its twin-cylinder technology to its subcompact sedan offering, the Tigor. Let's explore why the Tata Tigor iCNG is one of the top choices as India's most advanced, feature-loaded, and safest CNG sedan.
With the adoption of Tata's twin-cylinder layout, the Tigor iCNG now offers uncompromised and best-in-segment boot space. The twin-cylinder configuration involves positioning two compact CNG cylinders beneath the boot bed, creating a convenient area for storing your luggage. Additionally, the spare wheel has been repositioned below the car and is now accessible from the outside.
It is equally equipped as its regular top-spec petrol version, boasting amenities like automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, a 7-inch touchscreen information display with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a digitised instrument cluster, automatic AC, and steering-mounted controls.
But that's not all, the sedan is also outfitted with a height-adjustable driver's seat, auto-fold ORVMs, leatherette seat upholstery, and a push-button engine start/stop feature.
Tata’s prime focus has always been passenger safety, and with the Tata Tigor CNG, equipment such as dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, corner stability control, a rear parking camera and tyre pressure monitoring system ensures safety. For reference, the Tata Tigor has already been crash tested by Global NCAP and it has received an impressive 4-star safety rating.
Moreover, safety isn't confined solely to the vehicle's body structure or energy-absorbing features. When it comes to a CNG car, the emphasis on thermal safety is even more crucial. The Tigor iCNG incorporates a leak detection system which can detect gas leakage. Additionally, a fire extinguisher is conveniently positioned below the co-driver's seat, for use in emergency situations.
In fact, the Tigor features a Thermal Incident Protection system that shuts off the CNG supply to the engine if any unintended leaks are detected within the system or in the surroundings. Tata states that all CNG components have undergone comprehensive testing across various temperature and pressure conditions. Additionally, they have implemented extra protective measures around valves and nozzles to ensure the absence of any gas leaks.
The Tigor iCNG is equipped with a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol-CNG engine, delivering an impressive output of 73.4PS and 95Nm in CNG mode. This unit is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. These figures ensure that driving the Tigor in CNG mode remains indistinguishable from the regular petrol version, eliminating the need for frequent clutch use and continuous downshifting. The Tigor iCNG comes with a CNG tank capacity of 70 litres - the largest by far for CNG cars, and with a claimed fuel efficiency of 26.49 km/kg, it can run for up to a best-in-segment 300km in CNG mode, as claimed by Tata Motors.
The Tigor CNG boasts a distinctive direct engine start function in CNG mode, and its industry-first single advanced ECU facilitates seamless transitions between petrol and CNG modes. Given that the CNG cylinders contribute a slight weight increase to the sedan, potentially affecting its handling and ride characteristics, Tata has retuned the suspension setup to ensure a balanced ride and handling experience.
The Tata Tigor iCNG is available in three broad trims – XM, XZ, and XZ+ – including the option of a leatherette pack for the interior, priced from Rs 7.80 lakh to Rs 8.95 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). You can also choose the Tigor iCNG in one of its four attractive colour options, which are Magnetic Red, Opal White, Daytona Grey and Arizona Blue.
